Uganda has the distinction of being the first Micro Insurance Agency country office, which opened its doors in January 2006. It has proven a challenging market, but one of the things Micro Insurance Agency prides itself on is how we have led the industry and have caused a fundamental shift in coverage in Uganda.

Before we entered the country there was already some insurance offered to microfinance borrowers. However, this cover was restricted to death by accident only, as the market had deemed borrowers too risky to cover with comprehensive life insurance.

Enter the Micro Insurance Agency.

We worked hard with our underwriter to develop a product that covered death from any cause – including HIV/AIDS, and was also offered at a market-leading price – even cheaper than existing accident-only products. Microfinance borrowers deserved full protection at reasonable prices, and we were able to provide that need.

Subsequently, there has been a fundamental shift in the microinsurance market in Uganda, with other providers also offering more comprehensive products – but ours are still market leaders on both benefits and price, and we are proud to have been able to open up comprehensive cover for the poor.
