The Micro Insurance Agency opened its office in Ghana in March of 2007 and already has developed a number of products specific to the Ghanaian market.
In particular, a distressing problem in Ghana is the high cost of funerals relative to the amount of money people earn. The Ghanaian Museum of West African History puts it:
"The successful funeral is one that is well-attended, with ample food and drink for all. It is characterised by inspired drumming hat entices mourners to express their grief and consolation to the bereaved through dance. Such a funeral imposes considerable financial burden on the family of the deceased. The community is called upon to help with expenses. According to the Akan saying, "Everyone helps to carry the burden of a funeral" (Ayi, woso no abawabw)."
The main problem with everyone helping carry the burden of a funeral is that this is often not done for free, forcing the relatives of the deceased to sell productive assets or go into debt to others in their community in order to pay proper respect to the deceased.
Micro Insurance Agency has developed a funeral product specifically for the Ghanaian market that allows dignity in burial for an affordable premium price. Currently this product is only offered through micro finance organisations and other groups that serve the informal sector and the poor, but there are plans to offer this valuable product direct to the public.
The Micro Insurance Agency Ghana is headquartered Osu, Accra and the Country Manager is Mrs Genevieve Sackey. For further details or to inquire about a partnership, please don't hesitate to Contact Us.
