Richard Leftley
President
Richard has served as President of the Micro Insurance Agency since its inception in 2005. As President, Richard oversees the establishment of Micro Insurance Agency subsidiaries worldwide, which serve as insurance intermediaries for delivering micro insurance to the poor. Richard previously worked as a reinsurance broker for Benfield Greig Ltd, the world’s largest independent reinsurance brokering group where he was responsible for the African account and also covered the Middle East and South East Asia. Richard joined Opportunity International’s Technical Services Division in January 2002 as insurance product development manager and Vice President of Product Development and pioneered the introduction of insurance products within the Opportunity International Network.
Aaron Oxley
Chief Technology Officer
Prior to joining the Micro Insurance Agency, Aaron worked for UBS Private Banking in London. In 2004, Aaron served as Regional Director for MIS in Eastern Europe where he leveraged technology to help Opportunity’s institutions develop best practices and streamline their operations as they transitioned to the formal banking sector. Prior to this Aaron served as Senior Technical Consultant for Opportunity International’s MIS Services Division, providing MIS support and operational guidance to Opportunity institutions across three continents. Aaron has also performed numerous consulting projects for companies in London and New Zealand.
Keith Weaver
Chief Finance and Administrative Officer
Keith joined the Micro Insurance Agency with 30 years professional experience in the insurance industry. As Chief Finance and Administrative Officer, Keith oversees finance, project management, MIS and strategic planning. Until his recent retirement, Keith served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Manulife Financial in Asia, a leading Canadian-based insurance services company operating in 15 countries and territories worldwide with more than $400 billion under management.
Steve Coffey
Vice President, Strategic Relations
Steve joined the Micro Insurance Agency with 20 years senior management experience within the commercial sector and 12 years engineering management experience with the Royal Air Force. Steve previously specialized in establishing new businesses for international blue chip companies, including Omron Corporation in Japan, Checkpoint Systems in the USA and most recently Avery Dennison Corporation in the USA. In his private capacity Steve also established two UK based charities supporting street children in Kenya and is an active Trustee of the Kenya Christian Industrial Training Institute, Kenya’s largest independent technical college.
Shadreck Mapfumo
Vice President, Crop Insurance
Shadreck manages the crop insurance work of the Micro Insurance Agency in Africa and Asia. Since 2005, he has managed the Agency’s partnership with the World Bank’s Commodity Risk Management Group to pilot weather-indexed crop insurance in Malawi. This partnership has recently been expanded to include all of Eastern and Southern Africa. Shadreck holds an M.A. in Actuarial Studies from the Australian National University and a degree in Insurance and Risk Management from the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe.
Denis Garand
Vice President, Health Insurance
Denis joined the Micro Insurance Agency with twenty years commercial experience working for The Co-operators Insurance Company in Canada where he served as Group Actuary, Director of Marketing & Sales, and Vice President for Group Insurance. For the last seven years Denis has worked as an independent consultant and has emerged as the world’s leader on health insurance for the poor, having worked with organizations such as Grameen, BRAC, SEWA, Yeshasvini Trust, World Bank, CGAP, ILO and Phil Health on projects in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
Connie Stryjak
Vice President, Human Resources
Opportunity International’s Senior Vice President of Human Resources is jointly serving with the Micro Insurance Agency to recruit senior managers and technical experts for position at the global and local level. Connie joined Opportunity International in 2001 with 25 years of experience in human resource development. Prior to joining Opportunity, Connie served as Vice President of Human Resources for GE Capital Aviation Services, during which time she led and managed their programs and policies throughout Europe and Asia. Connie served with GE for 10 years before joining the work of Opportunity.
Dipankar “Dubby” Mahalanobis
Africa Regional Manager
As Africa Regional Manager, Dubby oversees the operations of Micro Insurance Agency subsidiaries in three countries. He previously served as Director of Business Development for APA Insurance Company in Kenya, where he was led their expansion to Uganda, Rwanda and Southern Sudan and expanded APA’s product portfolio, including product development in bancassurance, brand assurance, micro insurance, health insurance and takaful. Dubby also served as CEO and Managing Director of Microcare Insurance and Health Limited in Uganda, where he led the startup of the Medical Insurance and Healthcare Finance Company.
